Italy triumphs at the short track Europeans taking place at the Palavela in Turin. Three medals, with one glittering gold adorn a day that delivered excitement and entertainment. The undisputed champion of the track is Arianna Fontana who has established herself as a major star in the discipline. She reached new heights at the continental event in the 1500 metres, at the end of a comeback race that saw her overtake the Russian Sofia Prosvirnova. The bronze medal went to another Italian Lucia Peretti.
The Olympic multi-medallist was instead unlucky in the 500 metres, falling two laps from the end after taking the reins of the final, eventually won by Dutch De Vries ahead of Italian Martina Valcepina, who added a prestigious silver to the medal board.
Good news for the men came from the relay where, despite losing their edge, they still nailed second place in the semi-final (6'53"381) behind Russia, earning them a place in final A tomorrow, when the blues will challenge Hungary, the Netherlands and Russia. For Nicola Rodigari (C.S. Carabinieri), Yuri Confortola (C.S. Carabinieri), Tommaso Dotti and Andrea Cassinelli (V.G. Torino) this was a substantial feat after the difficulties of the first part of the season. In the men’s individual, the best result came from Dotti, who placed third in final B of the 1500. Andrea Cassinelli was left on the side-lines after exiting the competition in the 1500 metre semi-finals and 500 metre quarter finals.
