Sofia Goggia has scored her first World Cup win on the future olympic slope at the Jeongseon Alpine Centre in South Korea. The 24-year-old finance officer from Bergamo had the pleasure of beating Lindsey Vonn. Until today, Sofia had won nine medals, but no gold, as well as the bronze medal in the St Moritz Giant Slalom.
Sofia’s achievements qualify her as the first woman in Italian skiing history to win so many medals in a single season, beating a champion of the calibre of Deborah Compagnoni.
On this occasion, barely 7 hundredths of a second stopped Vonn pursuing her quest for the all-time success record held by Ingemar Stenmark. Third place went to the world cup downhill champion Ilka Stuhec. An eighth position for hardy Johanna Schnarf and a significant tenth place for Verena Stuffer completed this unforgettable day for the Italian team.
