The International Skating Union (ISU) has selected the four short track World Cup events that will enable athletes to qualify for the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Games, due to be held in South Korea between 9 and 25 February.
The first World Cup test will take place in Budapest between 28 September and 1 October. The other subsequent qualifying stages will be held in Dordrecht (Netherlands, 5-8 October), Shanghai (China, 9-12 November) and Seoul (South Korea, 16-19 November).
For each distance – men’s and women’s 500, 1000 and 1500 metres, women’s 3000 metre relay and men’s 5000 metre relay - special Olympic qualification rankings will be drawn up and then announced by the ISU on 5 December.
There are 55 national spots up for grabs for men, and the same number for women. An extra 10 spots overall (5+5) will then be reserved for South Korea, as the host country.
Specifically, the following maximum ceilings have been set:
32 Olympic cards in the men’s 500m
32 Olympic cards in the men’s 1000m
36 Olympic cards in the men’s 1500m
32 Olympic cards in the women’s 500m
32 Olympic cards in the women’s 1000m
36 Olympic cards in the women’s 1500m
8 national spots for the men’s relay and another 8 national spots for the women’s relay
Each National Olympic Committee has a maximum of 5 male athletes (should the team qualify, but only 3 may be entered in each individual event), otherwise this number is reduced to 3. The same quotas apply for women.
