The Italian biathlon squad has set its sights on PyeongChang 2018. The President of the FISI (Italian Winter Sports Federation), Flavio Roda, has decided which groups the Italian athletes will be split into in view of the next sports season due to culminate in the Korean Olympic Games. Reconfirmed as Head Coach is Fabrizio Curtaz, but there are few surprises too as regards the biathletes selected for Groups A and B, these being substantially the same ones as last season.
Poker of names for the men’s World Cup A team consisting of Dominik Windisch (two medals last season), Lukas Hofer, Giuseppe Montello and Thomas Bormolini. Reconfirmed in the women’s A team on the other hand is Dorothea Wierer (three individual medals and two team medals), Alexia Runggaldier (two individual medals, one in the relay and, above all, a world championship bronze medal in the 15 km event), Lisa Vittozzi (first World Cup individual medal last season and two medals in the relay) and Federica Sanfilippo (one medal in the relay).
The Italian National biathlon team will be back at work on Thursday 18 May. Curtaz has convened seven athletes for the first meeting to be staged in France, in Corrençon-en-vercors in the Savoy region. Absent, with justification, will be Hofer, who has just undergone a scheduled operation on his nasal passages and who will be joining the group at the next meeting.
