The PyeongChang Olympic Stadium will be hosting the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2018 Olympic Games and will also be used as Medal Plaza during the 17 days of competitions. This brand-new building in the heart of the Daegwalleyeong district can seat 35,000 people and is pentagon-shaped, recalling the five-pointed symbol featuring on the emblem of this year’s games which consists of the first consonants of the two syllables making up the word PyeongChang in the Korean alphabet.  As in the design of the Olympic torch, the pentagon shape represents at the same time the five continents and the spirit of sports which links races, nations, religions, genders and cultures. At their point of encounter, the centre of the plaza, that passion for sports comes alive, uniting the whole world.
